Avonworth Girls Athletic Association
Fast Pitch Softball Ages 9-18
Fast Pitch Softball (ages 9-15)
AGAA plays in the Greater Pittsburgh Girls Softball League (GPGSL). This is a league in which we play each team twice (home and away). The GPGSL groups teams by location. Typically AGAA plays in a division from the North Hills area.
Practices begin when the weather “breaks”. For Fall, games typically begin in September and run through October. For the Spring, games begin in mid-April and the season is typically over near beginning-middle June. Typically there is a 14 game regular season followed by playoffs.
Games and practices are typically 2 hours long, i.e. you will be at the field for 2 hours.
10U (10 and under): Ages 9-10
Emphasis is on skill refinement.
This is a child pitch division, however there are no walks. If a pitcher throws 4 balls, then a coach will come into the game and pitch to the batter. At this age you will see a wide variety of pitching, some very good and some not. A pitcher is only allowed to pitch 3 innings per game. An umpire will call balls and strikes as well as making rulings on the field.
Records are not kept at this age group – all teams make the playoffs.
Y
ou can expect 2-3 practices per week until games begin. Once games begin, there are typically 2 games per week (most of which are weeknights, very few are on the weekends) and practices will be limited. We encourage coaches to have a batting practice session once per week when games have begun.
12U (12 and under): Ages 11-12
Emphasis is on skill refinement and competition. This is a child pitch division.
At this age you will continue to see a wide variety of pitching, some of which can be dominating. A pitcher may pitch the entire game. An umpire will call balls and strikes as well as making rulings on the field.
There is a 6 run limit each inning. Records are kept at this age group. You can expect 2-3 practices per week until games begin. Once games begin, there are typically 2 games per week (most of which are weeknights, very few are on the weekends) and practices will be limited. We encourage coaches to have a batting practice session once per week when games have begun.
15U (15 and under): Ages 13-15
Emphasis is on game strategy, skill refinement, and competition.
Rules are similar to the 12U division.
Since most girls at this age group are playing for their school teams, the season does not begin until early May and ends at the beginning of July, followed by playoffs. We encourage coaches to have a batting practice session once per week when games have begun.
Games and practices are typically 2 hours long.
